Safety first

At Stedin, worker safety is always a top priority. That's why they came to us to help them rebuild their safety apps from the ground up. Using OutSystems, we were able to create them two amazing apps that not only keep everyone safe on the job but also help Stedin access more data, and save money on technology. Plus, we were able to retire old systems that weren't performing. These new apps are a total game-changer and are used with love every day.

Challenge

Stedin wanted to phase out their old system, that was built with legacy technology. They made an estimate, and landed on a development time of 5+ years. Of course, this wouldn’t fly. That’s why we were tasked with evaluating the project and coming up with a faster approach. Our task was clear. So we joined the existing team to build a new, improved app from scratch, to help Stedin's back-office create plans with proper safety measures.

Solution

We took a user-centered approach to development, working closely with end-users to create an app that fits their needs perfectly. This not only ensured that they were fully on board with the final product, but it also made adoption a breeze. To make the process even smoother, we collaborated with the business to create a streamlined implementation plan. This way, we were able to keep things running smoothly for Stedin and make the technical side as simple as possible. To save time and effort, we decided to only use the new system for new plans, instead of trying to transfer everything over. This reduced technical complexity and minimized the impact on the business - it was a total win-win!

Location, location, location

We made a custom integration between our app and ArcGIS, which is the map system that Stedin uses. This way, the app can show all the work that's happening on the network on a simple map.

Introducing an Effortless 4-eye Principle Check

A new feature now allows senior employees to easily approve or reject proposals. Users can also check a plan's status and look at all the previous changes made to it. Getting plans signed off is now a smoother process than ever before.

Results

  • The software was delivered in 6 months, a fraction of the original 3+ year estimate and with a much smaller team.

  • Users love the new software and quickly adoped it. There were no problems getting them to switch over.

  • We managed to phase out the legacy systems in time, saving Stedin lots of costs related to software licences.

  • Data quality has improved drastically

  • Lead times for creating safety plans have gone down

  • Plans don’t get bounced back and forth as much, first time right is now the norm.
